most popular and respected members, senator jeff bingaman of new mexico. when jeff came to this body 30 years ago, he had already led a life of accomplishment created in small-town new mexico, silver city. he was an eagle scout, graduated from harvard college, stanford law school, where he met his future wife, ann. while at stanford, he worked in senator robert f. kennedy's campaign for president. at the age of 35, he was elected new mexico attorney general in 1978. and four years later at the age of 39, elected to the united states senate. during his three decades in this body, jeff bingaman has been a classic workhorse senator as opposed to being a show horse senator. he is truly remarkable and distinctive among senators for his willingness to shun the limelight and share the credit in order to get important things done for his state and for this country. senator bingaman has been a much valued colleague of mine on the health, education, labor and pensions committee, but he has really made his mark in the senate a lasting mark in his role as chair of the energy and natural resources c

've crossed the red line. joining us is former new mexico governor bill richardson and andrew mccarthy. governor, he said that we have -- you know, a red line is here for us if we start seeing chem weapons being moved around. chemical weapons are being moved around. now he actually shifted his statement today, if they used them. what does that show but weakness for america if he doesn't mean what he says? >> well, i don't believe the president has changed his position. i'm not privy to all the discussions, but it's been very clear that the latest words are they're going to be some serious consequences. what you don't want to do, sean, at this stage is you don't want to give the other side what you're going to do, so there's ambiguity that is used in did i diplomacy. what we don't want is hezbollah, for instance, to get ahold of some of these chemical weapons and they're near sop of these weapon sites. there's a political element here that might be changing, and that is russia's position. if russia unloads their support of assad, i think assad is almost gone, and you are seeing that hap

new mexico and the senator from virginia. our first secretary of the treasury, alexander hamilton, observe energy is a leading character in good government. the president must lead in a divided government and must not advocate his or her responsibility. president obama has the responsibility to propose a real bipartisan plan to avert the fiscal cliff that can pass both the house and the senate. withdrawing from the recommendations of the simpson- bowles commission, the president could propose a plan that would not only avert the so-called fiscal cliff, but also help us avert the fiscal abyss. if president obama were to offer such a plan, republicans would act favorably. going over the cliff is unnecessary. as it has been observed in "the wall street journal," the president is boxing in the republicans. he is offering them a deal they cannot accept. first, the president has repeatedly called for a balanced solution involving both revenue and less spending. what is obvious to the most casual observer is that this plan is not a balanced. the fiscal cliff involves nearly four dollars

and called police. uma: we have new information on mexico's violent drug cartels. we've known for years these dangerous criminals have been operating in the u.s. but now police are saying they're extending their reach in america's cities and neighborhoods in very alarming ways. adam housley is joining us live from los angeles with more on this story. adam? >> reporter: yeah, oomph marks you might even say viciously violent ways ways that disturb a lot of local police forces here in the southwest. southern california may not be surprise to you, highest concentration of gang members in the country. a report by the fbi says nearly four in 10 u.s. gang members have some ties to drug trafficking organizations based in mexico. that is far more than any other outside group. also this fbi report says that the number of gang members operating in the u.s. shot up 40% in the last year. nearly one in three police officers here in the southwest are concerned saying that gang activity and drug trade in their areas has increased over the course of the last two years. people like assistant sheriff gary
